Top 5 Signs You Need Professional Pool Cleaning

Pool Water Out of Balance

Cloudy pool water (which can be caused by heavy rain or inadequate filtration) can be a sign of pool water chemical imbalance. If the numbers are off when you test your pool water for chemicals, you need to get them into an acceptable range to maintain healthy levels. The pH in your pool water should range from 7.2 to 7.8 and alkalinity between 80 and 120 parts per million (ppm).

Scale Build-Up

Pool water calcium numbers need to be accurate as well. Scale build-up occurs when calcium levels are too low. If you have a plaster or concrete pool, make sure your calcium level is between 200 and 275 ppm. Vinyl and fiberglass pools require 175-225 calcium levels.

Discolored Water

Green water is a sign of algae build-up. If you notice a green tint to your pool water, it could mean that you are in need of chlorine shock treatment.

Foamy Water

Bubbly or foamy pool water can be caused by contaminants such as sunscreen and other soaps and lotions swimmers may leave behind. Clogged filters can also cause pool water to foam. If your pool water pressure is anywhere from 8-10 psi above normal, a filter check and cleaning may be required.

Chlorine Smell

A strong smell of chlorine is also a sign that your pool water is out of balance, promoting cloudy or discolored water and the growth of potentially harmful bacteria. Safe, properly balanced pool water will have a heavy chlorine smell.
