Living in a tropical climate state as a child we had to come up with many inventive ways to stay cool during the hot summer months. When I lived in Miami I must have been around 10 years old when going to the pool was my favorite activity. Sure there was the daily fun of setting up of the slip and slide and running through the sprinklers but the pool was an entirely different ballgame. Usually we would walk to the park that was a few blocks away. I can remember the feel of the broken concrete sidewalk and running past the house that was rumored to be haunted with my cousins. Back in the 80’s it was normal to see kids walking around the neighborhood traveling and it was relatively safe.
The first thing that hits your nose as you get closer is the scent of chlorine, that powerful smell that welcomed you as you approached the entrance. The pool offered a refreshing and fast way to cool down for hours and it also gave parents a few hours of alone time. I remember we would stay in the pool until our little fingers and toes looked like prunes and our hair felt like a dry rat’s nest. Comical as it may seem, when I come to think about the potent overbearing smell that the pool released I am sure it was not safe for my skin or health. Needless to say our hair was greenish in color and completely damaged from the chlorine used in the pool.
Pools have come a long way since the 80’s making swimming pools safer and less damaging to your skin and hair. It is important to consult with your pool maintenance team to make sure the right amount of chemicals is used along with a regular safe regiment. Testing strips are an excellent way of checking that your pool is perfectly balanced at all times. We advise you always keep these around your home for accurate chemical readings. Keep in mind we provide free water testing as well.
